Glenn D. Sumner - Chief Executive Officer

SumnerFor over thirty years Mr. Sumner has held a variety of positions in healthcare management and consulting. He was instrumental in the creation of OrthoTennessee in 1998 helping to structure and install a unique combination of centralized business services supported by the location specific support operations in each of the four Care Centers. As the CEO of OrthoTennessee he is responsible not only for overseeing the management of daily practice operations, he also has been particularly involved in developing strategies and ventures to enhance the market share of OrthoTennessee. He has spearheaded the introduction of several new ancillary services.

Mr. Sumner’s past experience includes:
- Senior Vice President of a medical office development company.
- Principal of a national healthcare management consulting firm.
- Regional Director for a multi-hospital network support services company.

Mr. Sumner holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and a masters in business administration. Professionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Health Executives and a Member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. Mr. Sumner and his wife Judi have a son and daughter, both married, he serves as an elder in his church and enjoys golf, reading and traveling.

 

 

William Kenneth Bell, M.D. – Medical Director

Bell William Kenneth Bell, M.D. was raised in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1968. He received a B.S. in Engineering Physics from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Bell completed his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1976. His rotating internship and general surgery internship was completed at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. His four-year orthopaedic residency was completed in 1981 at the Willis C. Campbell Clinic/University of Tennessee in Memphis. He has been in private practice with Maryville Orthopaedic Clinic since 1982.

Dr. Bell has been actively involved in leadership roles with Blount Memorial Hospital and the Maryville community. He served on the Maryville City School Board for eight years where he was Chairman of the School Board for four of those years. Dr. Bell also served on the Maryville City Council for four years. He is currently a committee member for Blount County Young Life.

Dr. Bell has been the team physician for Maryville College since 1982. He is also the Medical Director of Mountain Challenge.

Dr. Bell and his wife, Patty, reside in Maryville. They have four sons. Some of his personal interests are wilderness medicine, traveling, hiking, biking, triathlons and marathons

 

 

Joseph C. DeFiore, Jr., M.D. – Medical Director

DeFiore Dr. DeFiore completed medical school in Chicago at Loyola, an internship at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York followed by two years in the Army in Panama. He then completed a first year general surgery residency at the University of California in San Francisco, an orthopedic residency in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and a Hand Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and Louisville, Kentucky.

Dr. DeFiore came to Knoxville in 1972 to practice orthopedics and hand surgery. He sub-specializes in hand surgery and rheumatoid surgery of the hand. He is a member of multiple orthopedic organizations and has served as President of four of these.

Dr. DeFiore is board certified in orthopedics as well as hand surgery and has been an Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons for more than 20 years.  He has been selected by his fellow physicians to the prestigious listing of the "Best Doctors in America."

Dr. DeFiore is the father of two married daughters and now has three grandchildren.  His wife, Jayne, has a PhD in History and is retired from the University of Tennessee.

 

 

Cheryl Layson-Peters – Chief Financial Officer

Ms. Layson-Peters has over twenty five years experience in financial management. She joined the management team on 1/1/99, a year after Southeastern Orthopaedic PC’s (OrthoTennessee) formation. As CFO of OrthoTennessee, Ms. Layson-Peters is responsible for oversight of the company’s accounting department, the production of pertinent financial reporting, and the development of care center and ancillary service budgets. In addition, she works closely with the CEO, OrthoTennessee physicians and other OrthoTennessee managers in analyzing financial trends and in the development of long range planning.

Ms. Layson-Peters’ past experience includes:
- 16 years as divisional controller/CFO for one of the south’s largest home health companies
- Extensive experience in Medicare cost reporting and reimbursement regulations
- Regional Consultant for a physician management services company

Ms. Layson-Peters holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Tennessee CPA license. She is an active member of the Tennessee Chapter of Healthcare Financial Management Association and several financial professional organizations.

 

Ellen M. Massey – Director of Human Resources

As Director of Human Resources, Ellen Massey has over 17 years of employee benefit and human resource experience. Her past experience includes Benefits Specialist for a national communications and publishing company, Benefits Analyst for a paper products company, Employee Benefits Trust Officer for a national bank, and Legal Administrator for a law partnership.

During her tenure at OrthoTennessee, she has worked closely with the executive management to develop a positive corporate culture. She publishes a monthly employee newsletter, develops and delivers supervisor training, and provides the administration and education for the employee benefits, and handles the recruitment and orientation of new employees.

Ms. Massey holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a major in finance and a minor in sociology. She is extremely active with her husband and three children, playing and coaching soccer, running, and adventure racing.
