Mark K. Thomas, M.D.
Dr. Mark Thomas is originally from Austin, Texas. His early interests were primarily baseball and swimming, competing with the Austin Aquatic Club from the age of six. His swimming career culminated in his receipt of the AAU Amateur Athlete of the Year award in 1976. In high school, he was a varsity letterman in both baseball and football for three years. He was also a National Merit Scholar and Senior Class President. Following high school, he was accepted to and attended Rice University in Houston, where he majored in biology and minored in philosophy. Following his graduation, Dr. Thomas spent three months involved in geology research in the Arctic Wildlife refuge in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska.
Dr. Thomas attended medical school at the University of Texas Health and Sciences Center in Houston. During his fourth year of medical school, he was a member of a student exchange program and spent a six week medical rotation in China. He was accepted to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Houston and completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of Texas. During his medical training he was honored to work with such notable medical figures as Red Duke, Denton Cooley and Bruce Browner. Training in the largest medical center in the world, Dr. Thomas had the opportunity to work in the Texas Heart Institute, Hermann Hospital, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital among others.
During his year as chief resident, Dr. Thomas received the Outstanding Resident of the Year award as well as the Research Award for his work on spinal cord injuries. Upon graduation, Dr. Thomas chose to work in Maryville, Tennessee because of the unparalleled integrity and skills of his partners and the peerless quality of life available in Maryville.
In addition to general orthopaedics, he specializes in spine surgery and is a member of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Thomas has been a team physician for both the Alcoa Tornadoes and the William Blount Governors and is a graduate of the Leadership Blount Class of 2001. He is married, has three children and lives in Maryville.
