IMPORTANT CHANGES IN PHYSICAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INCOMING 7TH AND 9TH GRADE ATHLETES!

The Tennessee State Board of Education has proposed a new ruling stating that all incoming 7th and 9th grade athletes will need to complete an Early, Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) or well-child exam. This will include 7 components listed below:

  1. Health History
  2. Behavior and Mental Health Assessment
  3. Complete Physical Exam
  4. Lab tests that are individual specific (i.e. urinalysis, blood work, etc)
  5. Vision and Hearing Screening
  6. Immunizations
  7. Anticipatory Guidance- Tobacco, Drugs, and Seat Belts

There has been a delay in the process of moving forward with the proposed rule change regarding sports physicals for 7th and 9th graders. In the meantime, the State Board of Education still recommends that 7th and 9th grade athletes get the well-child checkup/EPSDT screen.

Until the rule-making process is complete, however, either exam (the traditional sports physical or the comprehensive well-child checkup/EPSDT screen) will be accepted by the State Board of Education and by TSSAA.

If you chose to obtain a complete well child exam, please make arrangements to get the EPSDT done through their primary care physician or pediatrician. The clearance form and more information are available at http://health.state.tn.us/sportsphysical  You will need to take the clearance form with you to the doctor’s appointment.
