Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Specialist
Edwin E. Spencer, Jr., M.D. is originally from the coast of North Carolina and completed his undergraduate training at North Carolina State University. He graduated from Duke Medical School and completed his orthopaedic internship at the University of Michigan. During his training, he became very involved in research and completed several research projects and helped author several book chapters. He strongly believes that research is a cornerstone of orthopaedics and as such procured grants from the Mid-America Association and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and private industry. He subsequently completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Research completed there was nominated for the Neer award (the highest award in shoulder surgery).
Dr. Spencer specializes in all forms of shoulder and elbow surgery from replacement and revision of replacement surgery to arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs and all other forms of arthroscopic surgery. He also specializes in reconstruction of traumatic upper extremity deformities including the sternoclavicular joint. Dr. Spencer not only performs these surgeries but also teaches courses regarding the surgeries at the Orthopaedic Learning Center as national faculty. He also is involved in research endeavors through a collaborative effort with Oak Ridge National Labs and the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Spencer continues to perform research and publish articles and was recently elected to join the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon Society. This is a highly selective society and inclusion is based on significant contributions to shoulder and elbow surgery. There are only two other members in the state of Tennessee. He is also a member of the Association of Clinical Elbow & Shoulder Surgeons.
Dr. Spencer has enjoyed integrating into the Knoxville community and has joined the Executive Board for the Great Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He looks forward to serving the Knoxville community for many years to come. Dr. Spencer and his wife, Tracy, have two young children.
