Southeastern Orthopaedics Introduces Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy(ESWT)

ESWT is a new procedure used to treat chronic heel pain (plantar fasciitis) and tennis/golfers elbow (lateral/medial epicondylitis). ESWT is a non-invasive procedure that uses therapeutic pressure waves to relieve pain and inflammation with a single treatment. This technology is similar to lithotripsy used in the treatment of kidney stones.

Candidates for ESWT have pain which has lasted several months without responding to conservative care such as exercise, splinting and anti-inflammatory medication.

ESWT is performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure lasts 30-45 minutes. Patients should be able to return to normal daily activities within twenty four to forty eight hours. The treatment may take from one to three months to be fully effective.

The easily accessible, ergonomically designed chair of the extremity scanners at our Maryville and Oak Ridge locations allows for maximum patient comfort. All three locations allow the highest quality MRI’s to be completed in a familiar and welcoming environment.
